About FIRST

FIRST FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit organization, that aspires to transform culture, making science, math, engineering, and technology as cool for kids as sports are today.

FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway Human Transporter. FIRST is comprised of four programs: FIRST Robotics Competition for high school students, the FIRST Tech Challenge (formerly FIRST Vex Challenge), also for high school students, the FIRST LEGO League for ages 9-14, and Junior FIRST LEGO League for ages 6-9. FIRST also operates FIRST Place, an innovative science and technology center, including a hands-on children's science museum.

FIRST partners with businesses, educational institutions and government which provide funding, in-kind donations and volunteers. FIRST is based on the support of thousands of volunteer team mentors and other volunteers who assist with competitions and other events.
